About Me

Hey there! My name is Mel and I am a retro lifestyle blogger. I started Little Miss Gen X to share my personal experiences as a forty-something Gen X'er slowly inching my way toward mid-life. Yikes! I also blog about my creative projects, I am a fiber artist who loves to crochet, cross-stitch, and hand stitch, tips on frugal living, pop culture references, and lots of nostalgia.

When I'm not blogging, I'm most likely at Starbucks sipping on a Trenta Verry Berry Hibiscus while writing or filling in my planner, on the couch with my rescue kitty, Daphne, crocheting and binge-watching Stranger Things, The Goldbergs, or Leverage, in the car jamming to my Spotify playlists, or volunteering at my local used bookstore.

I am also just a little bit obsessed with the '80s. I LOVE EVERYTHING about the '80s, well everything but Kokomo. I loathe that song. I'm sure there will a blog post about that on here soon!

Here are a few fun facts about me. . . .

  • I'm a Southern girl born and raised, originally from the Sunshine State but a Tarheel now.
  • I swam with sharks in the Florida Keys! It is crazy but true.
  • I can't live without music. I listen to everything from Anthrax to The Partridge Family, but no jazz, instrumentals, or rap (except for the Beastie Boys).
  • I always thought I'd marry Simon Le Bon, but Yasmin got to him first.
  • I've been to Disney World over 100 times, including singing in the Candlelight Processional twice with my high school chorus.
  • Centipede was my jam back in the day. I would play every morning before school, which is probably why I have the beginning symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Eh! It was worth it!
  • I hate to cook. God Bless, Irving Naxon, the inventor of the crock pot. (I had to look that up!)
  • I am working toward becoming a minimalist, or as much as my '80s collection will allow.
  • I'm currently writing two novels: a mystery/suspense & a time-travel fantasy set in the '80s.

And a few of my favorite nostalgic things:

  • The Hollywood Sportatorium where I saw Poison, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Aerosmith . . . .
  • The Swept Away book series by Eileen Goudge.
  • Peanut Butter Boppers. (Nature Valley, bring these back, please!)
  • Nancy Thompson was my hero! (The heroine from A Nightmare on Elm Street.)
  • So was Jeannie Bueller. (I love the anti-heroes too.)
  • My toys: Barbie, Fashion Plates, Glamour Gals, Lego, Clue, ViewMaster. . .
  • Roller skating around my pool.
  • My yellow water-resistant Walkman. (It still works great!)
  • And, the music!!!
